The Writing By Writers Workshop @ Tomales Bay brings aspiring writers into close community with nationally known poets and writers. Manuscript and poetry workshops are limited to 12 participants to ensure an intimate setting. 2017 faculty include Garth Greenwell, Pam Houston, Fenton Johnson, Joan Naviyuk Kane, Cheryl Strayed and Luis Alberto Urrea.
Fenton shows excerpts of Academy-Award winning documentarian Lourdes Portillo’s film La Ofrenda: Days of the Dead, on which he was a story consultant. La Ofrenda contrasts celebrations of el dia de los muertos in Portillo’s native Oaxaca and in San Francisco’s Mission District. Attendees will be invited to share a memory of someone who made a difference in their lives or in the LGBT movement. Masks and memorabilia welcome.
Fenton Johnson reading and in conversation with NYT best-selling author and fellow Kentuckian Kim Edwards (The Memory-Keeper’s Daughter, The Lake of Dreams).
Star Berea College journalist and author Jason Howard interviews best-selling author Kim Edwards and Fenton Johnson, in a conversation entitled “Writing Against the Wind: Gender, Sex, and Sexuality in the Common / Wealth.”
All three authors will be at the Fair for much of the day. The conversation is scheduled for 3-4 p.m.
